Badminton Festival

First of all, on 6th of January 2015, the yr4 badminton team went to an amazing festival at Bitterne Park School. The people who came were Emilia, Julia, Alexandra, Chloe, Kevin, Aaron C, Alphen, Alfie, Mr Cowap and Miss Milne. At the festival we were in 4 different groups and they were named A,B,C,D. At the festival there were 6 different activities, like moving the shuttlecock to the hula hoop and rallies. After all the practice, it was time to gather points to get first or second. On the Friday that week, we were told who came first or second and we came second . We were so excited and happy and we would love to do it again!

Class Baking

On the 5th of February, year 4 had the opportunity to make bread. First of all, we washed our hands to be hygienic and then we put our aprons on. After that, we put the flour in, added yeast and then salt on the opposite side. Then we made a small hole in the middle of the bowl. Inside the hole we poured vegetable oil and water.
Science alert!
The vegetable oil and water didn’t mix together.

A little while later we mixed the yeast, salt and flour together tipping the dough onto a lightly floured work surface. Now came the hard part, getting the dough smooth! What a fluster! We placed it in an oiled bowl. We made it into a ball and dusted the loaf with flour. Finally, we cut a cross, about 6 cm wide, into the top of the loaf. We set the oven to 200 degrees and the dough we baked it for 25-30 minutes. Before we took the bread out, we checked that the bread was brown. In the end we waited for the bread to cool down and placed the loaf on a small plate. It was such a fun day!

Swimming

Each year, year 4 learn some new skills. In 2014, 4SB had the opportunity to develop the skill of swimming. We had to take our swimming kit which consisted of goggles, a hat, trunks and some spare clothes to enable us to learn to swim. When we got to Shirley pool we noticed that there were different types of water levels in the indoor pool. There was both a shallow and deep water section . We learnt different skills every week from our instructor called Guy. Some examples are the rocket, the worm and the dolphin dive.

It was super fun! The last day of swimming was the best. We had an underwater tea party. Can you believe it?! Then we had a big surprise. A giant obstacle course. It was floating in the deep end of the pool and we had to get to the finish line in the quickest time. Everyone had at least one go and had lots of fun. It was the best time ever!

Winchester Science Centre

On Tuesday 10th February our class went to Winchester Science Centre (formerly known as Intech).  When we arrived, we put our coats and lunchboxes on a shelf. After that, we sat down on a table which had been reserved for our class. We then listened to the rules carefully. After we finished listening to the rules we went upstairs to go to the planetarium. Inside the planetarium we learnt about space and watched a show called ‘Neighbourhood Earth’. It was amazing! One of the things we learnt was that every star forms a picture of something, for example, one picture could form a horse or a lion. After watching and learning about space, we went downstairs and experimented with the science equipment. Some of the equipment we used included the following:
            The balancing act
            The buzz table
            The handshake mirror
            The active wall.
After playing with the equipment downstairs we went to the shelf where we had put our belongings and got our lunchboxes. We then went to a table and had our lunch. When we had finished having our lunch and talking to our friends we went upstairs and played with the equipment upstairs.

My favourite piece of equipment was the handshake mirror because it was really funny when we put our hand in the mirror.

One thing we learnt was that the earth is always moving but you can’t feel it happening. It was finally home time so we collected our belongings and got into our groups that we came in. We then went in the minibuses and travelled back to school.
It was such a great day and I can’t wait for next year.

Book Week!!

On Monday  12th January all the  children in Springhill Catholic Primary School were called to the main hall to talk about Book Week. There were many activities to compete in, for example, the weirdest place to read, design your own book mark, design a new cover for favourite book and the reading cards were way more popular than last term!!

Visitors
On every week day a visitor came in to talk about how important reading is in our lives and jobs.

On Monday, 2 footballers came in and they answered all our questions and told us all about their job. Thebe’s mum came in to talk about her job (to help older people). She also told us why old people need to read. She told us her favourite book and author. On Wednesday an author, Chris Wormell, came to tell us about his books and also read one to us. He told us about his childhood and his life at home going up into the loft to read and draw. After that he drew 6 animals put together which were a bunny, a giraffe, a rhino and a snake.
Dress-up dayOn Friday everyone came in dressed up in characters from the book their year group were doing. Year F decided on a Free Style theme, whereas Year 1 selected ‘The Enormous Crocodile’. Year 2 thought dressing up as ‘The B.F.G.’ characters would be fun while Year 3 picked ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’. Year 4 chose ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ as their characters to dress up as and Year 5 ‘The Witches’. Finally Year 6 were ‘The Twits’. After assembly, everyone went out in the year 3, 4, 5 playground to show our costumes to everyone in Springhill. What a colourful display it was!

Volcanoes

Firstly, we went outside to do an experiment on how volcanoes erupt. In this case, we needed a bottle of diet coke and some Mentos in order to make the eruption. Firstly, Miss Bedford attached a red tube with a string on it to the top of the bottle and she put Mentos inside the red tube.

After that, Miss Bedford pulled the string and the Mentos dropped into the diet coke.

Then, we sat down to watch the explosion.

As soon as the Mentos were dropped into the diet coke it began to fizz and bubble and the pressure built until it finally erupted!

The reason why we did this experiment was because we were learning about volcanoes and we wanted to know how the magma goes up the magma chamber and explodes out of the volcano!

Year 3/4 Football Festival

On 11th February 11 pupil, including me, from year 3 and 4 went to a football festival. These are the pupils who went : Jamie , Griffin , James , Alfie , Nevin, Jose , Elliot , Alan,  Simon, Josh and myself . Following on from this, we travelled by minibus. We played at a place called Test Park. When we arrived, we put down our stuff and we talked about the rules. It was not just football matches but it was an opportunity to show off our skills. As a result, this day made us improve a lot in football. This is one of the activities that we played. It was passing through the cones. Passing through the cones is when a team passes the ball through two cones. Each time they pass through the cones they get a point. In addition to this, it is quite a hard game because a team will try and stop you. Luckily, we won against Bassett Green school. It was a wonderful day and it made us much better at football!
